Our Own Backyard Mission

The Columbus region represents the second highest population of homeless individuals in the state of Ohio, with over 1700 tracked by care providers.  Many of these homeless are veterans.

Our Own Backyard Mission is a ministry dedicated to feeding and clothing the homeless in downtown Columbus.  The ministry started in 2000 with two sisters who have faithfully cared for their homeless friends living on the streets – giving them food, clothing, blankets, flashlights, toiletries, and many other necessities.  We prepare a hot, nourishing meal every Saturday morning and deliver it, along with clothing and other supplies, to the homeless at 5 stops on the West side of Columbus.  Our friends live in the woods, along railroad tracks, and under overpasses – anywhere they can find a safe, dry shelter.

There are two opportunities to serve:

On any Sunday of the year:

  • Donate an item from our “Top Ten List” of needed items.  You will find the list on the tub/box in the Commons.
  • Consider donating a $10 gift card to Meijer, Walmart, or GFS where we can shop for needed items to give to the homeless.

On the morning of December 14th (or ANY Saturday!)

  • Join Becky and Mike to prepare a meal and then deliver this meal and other collected items to the homeless on the west side.
